Hervey Bay Boating

This information is general in nature about Hervey Bay boating, it is not about educating boaties. Hervey Bay is well served by boating organisations willing to teach you about becoming a safe boatie, prior to heading out into the azure waters of the Bay.

If you wish to participate in this activity you will need to become aware of the safety requirements of boating in open waters. The waters of the Bay are very safe in the right conditions and will give hours of boating pleasure so long as you use a modicum of common sense and adhere to safe boating rules.

Hervey Bay has a huge expanse of relatively safe water, ideal for boating. However don’t be fooled by its typically placid nature. At the end of the day water safety requirements are the same everywhere in the world and if you are a boating rookie then consider one of the numerous charter companies available or undertake a Boat Masters course. If you venture out into deep water, unprepared and inexperienced then you are asking for trouble.

In Hervey Bay boating is very accessible, however a licence is required to operate any boat which is powered by a motor of more than 4.5kW (over 6HP), is capable of speeds in excess of 10 knots and has a planing or non-displacement hull. Beware though, that the Bay encompasses a large area and so it pays to check and double check your fuel requirements and absolute range to ensure your safe return. Also should a westerly wind blow up then be prepared for the worst as Fraser Island will no longer offer shelter from the worst of the weather and the sea may become treacherous.

Prior to departing you are encouraged to log onto Volunteer Marine Rescue set up specifically for Hervey Bay Boating. This organisation provides the boating public in Hervey Bay waters with a highly professional rescue service, available on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Their dedicated Rescue Vessel Commanders, crews and Radio Operators are all highly trained, with vessels and crews prepared to go out in all weathers, day or night should you encounter difficulty.

Frequencies Monitored by Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay:

MF/HF 2.182 Mhz Ch 16 - Call / Emergency Frequency 2.524 Mhz Ch 73 - Working frequency Ch 22 - Repeater (for waters north of the Hervey Bay Fairway Beacon)

There are a number of public launching facilities available around the Bay. The best of these is the ramp at the Urangan Boat Harbour, this offers all tide launching. However, if you intention is to just play around the shores in front of Hervey Bay City then your best bet at high tide maybe to use the Ramp available at Torquay beside the Hervey Bay Sailing Club. Prior to deciding stop by and have a look to see which site suits your experience and equipment. Launching at Torquay will save you commute time and fuel.

There is also a Boat ramp at Gatakers Landing, on the Northern tip of Point Vernon and another private ramp on the eastern tip. The Gatakers ramp was upgraded in 2008 and additional parking was added.

Another all tide launching ramp is available at Burrum Heads, a popular fishing and camping village that is also experiencing growth from sea changers. This ramp gives ready access to the mouth of the Burrum River and the western shores of the Bay.
